FAMILY, friends and colleagues came together to pay tribute to the Mayor of Ferndown Steve Lugg.

A celebration of life service was held at St Marys Church in Ferndown yesterday, after the councillor and former member of the household cavalry died last month.

The military service began with a procession from the Royal British Legion Club down Church Road.

Mourners, including military personnel and civic officials, packed the church and adjoining hall.

Mayors from across Dorset were in attendance at the service, alongside many fellow East Dorset and Dorset County councillors.

After the coffin was carried into the church, with Steve's military uniform on top, the service was led by Rev Patches Chabala.

East Dorset District councillor Ray Bryan, chairman of the Christchurch and East Dorset Conservative Association, delivered a tribute to Steve.

Cllr Bryan said the Ferndown representative was filled with "passion" and provided energy and a range of ideas to local government.

He pledged to carry on the legacy Steve created in supporting young people and those from less fortunate backgrounds to achieve.

Matt Griffiths and Tori Allen performed hymn In Christ Alone at the service.

Steve's son Rhys, who was one of the pallbearers, spoke movingly about his fondest memories with his father.

He said despite his father's life being cut short at 54, he still led a full life in which he achieved so much. Rhys said he one day would like to follow in his fathers footsteps and serve as a Yeoman of the Queen's Guard. This was followed by a bible reading from son Edwin.

Steve had a passion for exploring and close friend Andrew Hopkins, Hoppo, paid tribute to him.

Andrew spoke of their shared love of The Jam, which sparked their connection when they first met. He also recalled some of their adventures, including a trip to Everest.

The service concluded with the Last Post and a minute's silence, followed by commendation from Rev Chabala.

Steve died on July 20 aged 54 after a short battle with cancer. Donations at the service were given to Macmillan Caring Locally and the Royal British Legion Ferndown Branch.
