Barry Lambert (letters August 11) presents a sound argument for the Jurassic Coast Highway. Coincidentally he touches on another, equally compelling, issue which has troubled me for some time.
Our borough has many local people, and street sleepers, desperate for homes. We have seen the failure of a plan to establish a dependency rehabilitation centre, due to the lack of a suitable site. Yet there are empty buildings admirably suited, simply going to waste. I refer to the former Council Offices, the Ferry Terminal buildings and the Ferrybridge pub. Some of these are already owned by "us"; others could be the subject of compulsory purchase, as suggested by Barry Lambert. Very probably all have heating, toilet and basic cooking facilities installed and have lain un-utilised for years. With a bit of initiate these buildings could provide a valuable facility, until they are required for some more long-term cohesive purpose.
Is it too much to expect a bit of lateral thinking by our Councillors - or will we as usual hear all the reasons why things cannot be done?
