A police officer went into the sea to rescue a woman who entered the water off the pier bandstand yesterday (March 20).

Wyke Coastguard Rescue Team posted on Facebook: "Full team paged along with Weymouth inshore lifeboat to a fully clothed female entering the water off the Pier Bandstand. Some team members arrived on scene quickly to see the female recovered from the water by Dorset Police. Both coastguard and RNLI were stood down, the casualty was left with Police to await an ambulance."

Dorset Police said: "We were called at 5.26pm on Wednesday by a member of the public to reports of a woman in the water in front of the Pier Bandstand, on The Esplanade in Weymouth.

"An officer went into the water and brought her to safety. She was checked over by paramedics and was taken to a place of safety."
