A couple have told of their shock after a car crashed into their house causing substantial damage.

At 10.45pm on Friday fire control took an emergency call from the ambulance service to reports of a car that had crashed into a house in Portland Road, Weymouth.

Yvonne and Graham Helms, both 63, were sat in their living room when a car smashed into their house.

Mrs Helms said: "A car smashed into our living room. We were sat on the sofa watching the news and we were just about to go to bed when there was this huge bang and all this glass went flying across the living room.

"I rang the police straight away and there were all these flashing lights outside and there was glass everywhere.

"We were in such shock at the time, I'm just glad nobody was hurt.

"It was a man driving and he had his teenage son and his son's girlfriend in the back seats. How they all survived is astounding. The two youngsters were in a mess.

"The noise alone was horrendous. It was very lucky that nobody was sitting in the front passenger side.

"It was very lucky because he hit our car first and then our boat as well and that slowed him down.

"We have been told to only live in the back of the house for the time being.

"The car is a write off, the boat is a write off. It's just lucky it didn't all go up in flames. We did have three fire engines here last night just in case."

Mr Helms said: "His car was actually stuck in our car and I had to help cut it out with an angle grinder. I actually had to cut the end of our trailer off because it was so well embedded into the car.

"We were going to bed at quarter to 11 and then this happened and we were picking up bits of glass until quarter to five.

"The thing I was most worried about was it all going up in flames because there was batteries and fuel on board the boat."

The fire service said: "Two fire engines from Weymouth and one from Portland along with an officer and the urban search and rescue team from Eastleigh in Hampshire were mobilised to the scene last night.

"On arrival the crew confirmed that a car had crashed into a house. Firefighters worked with the police and ambulance to assist the people in the house and car.

"A van and a boat that were parked on the driveway of the house were damaged and the structural integrity of the building was said to be 'compromised'.

"Nobody was taken to hospital or seriously injured.

"During the incident one fire engine from Dorchester stood by at Portland, one fire engine from Dorchester stood by at Weymouth and one fire engine from Maiden Newton stood by at Dorchester."

Update: Dorset Police said they were alerted at 10.43pm by a number of passing motorists who witnessed this incident.

The scene was made safe and the property is in the hands of a structural engineer.
