Where could families meet Darth Vader, Harry Potter and Optimus Prime all in the same place? Comic con of course!

Redlands Community Sports Hub in Weymouth hosted the area's comic book convention and gaming festival on Sunday.

It was a hugely successful event with big crowds attending.

There were people selling comics and memorabilia, a whole gaming section with ready-to-play Xboxes and Playstations and a costume competition as well.

James Maber, 21, came from Yeovil to sell his comics, games, figurines and other collectibles.

He said: "There's not a lot of conventions in this part of the country, but judging by how busy it has been today I would imagine we could be seeing a few more events like this in the area.

"There has been people from all different walks of life, the younger ones who buy the games and the older ones who are into the more collectable memorabilia."

Martin Gale travelled from Southampton to take part in this comic con.

He said: "I run the virtual reality experience, the kids love it and so do some of the adults.

"People are really loving the event with the cos-playing and everything else that's going on. The gaming side has gone really well.

"A lot of people have come from quite far to take part as well so you can see the demand is there for it."

Mel Ware from the Oxfam store in Dorchester came down to sell hundreds of comics and other memorabilia that had been donated to the charity, most of it coming from one person.

She said: "It took me and my 30 staff three whole months to catalogue and price everything donated to us. It just shows the extraordinary lengths we go to to make sure everything that is donated to us is sold so we can keep raising money for Oxfam.

"We managed to work out that the estimated value of it all would be more than £5,000. A show like this seemed the perfect opportunity to try and sell as much of this as we could today."

Lisa Clarke, organiser of the event, said "It's been great, so busy. We've had the costume competition and families have come along for the free photo opportunities with characters from films and TV shows.

"We host comic cons all over the country and we want to plan more events for this area."
