RESCUERS were surprised when inquisitive dolphins popped up to see what was happening.

Weymouth lifeboats had been launched and coastguards mobilised after a jet ski caught fire.

A spokesman for Lulworth Coastguard said: "Solent Coastguard requested the team proceed to Ringstead as they had taken multiple 999 calls reporting a boat on fire.

"On the way to the location, news filtered through of a person now in the water.

"Both Weymouth lifeboats were making their way to scene.

"The team arrived at Ringstead and met with several first informants.

"Once we got there, everyone was safe and being looked after by a couple of local boats and our local dolphins.

"Two team members were kitted up with water rescue equipment in case the team were required to enter the water.

"Weymouth inshore lifeboat (ILB) had arrived on scene, some 700m offshore from White Nothe and ascertained that the vessel in question was a jet ski.

"The fire was now out and person recovered from the water.

The ILB towed the jet ski back to Weymouth harbour.

"With no one in any danger and lifeboat not requiring shoreline assistance, the team were stood down."
