NOMINATIONS for one of the vacant seats on the parish council closed with two candidates putting up for election on Thursday, 17th July. Polling cards have been sent to all those on the electoral roll with details of where voting takes place. At the meeting of the parish council the two candidates were present and invited to make a presentation to the assembled villagers.

  • JO MAIDMENT spoke of how she has enjoyed living in Crossways since moving into the village 2 years ago. Having been a councillor previously in an area with a similar environment Jo felt she had much to offer the community.
  • PETER TIZZARD has been associated with Crossways through his family and business for many years. He is hoping to meet as many residents as possible with details of how he sees the future and what he would like to offer as a councillor.
  • ELECTIONS can be called if 10 or more residents write to request and this is what has happened on this occasion. Usually councils are able to co-opt new councillors for the remaining term. In response to a request, the chairman of the council was able to read out the list of the residents who had written to West Dorset District Council.
  • THERE are obvious cost implications to holding an election with polling cards, public notices, polling station staffing and so on. One of the members of the public wanted to know if the costs could be made available and this is to be looked into.
  • CROSSWAYS cubs and scouts were very lucky to have an invitation for a sneak preview around the military museum at the keep in Dorchester, They were given a VIP tour around the displays and watching a video about the history of the Dorset & Devonshire regiment.
  • THERE was plenty to see and the youngsters enjoyed discovering some of the fascinating items which are on display. The added bonus of a guided talk added to the understanding of the rich history of the regiment, the campaigns and the ways that soldiers lived and died.
  • THEY felt on top of the world finishing their tour with going out onto the roof and studying the skyline of Dorchester. It was a glorious summers evening with lovely views looking out across the countryside.
  • WITH the new football season just around the corner pre-season training has commenced for the juniors. Owermoigne FC train and play some of their matches at the playing field in Dick O'Th Banks Road. They are always on the look out for new members and are hoping to strengthen the squad of ambitious, friendly and enthusiastic players.
  • TRAINING starts at 6.45pm on Thursday evenings until September. Contact Steve Cole on 07811 516525 or e mail steve@owermoignefc.co.uk
  • THE RECENT Coffee morning held at the rectory in aid of the West Stafford church rood restoration fund raised £238. Many thanks to all who supported in any way.
  • CHRISTIAN Aid collections earlier in the month raised £1,282 and area organiser Vic Myers is very grateful to the team who helped him with this appeal. As President of the scout group he was also able to call on the help of the scout troop who were able to deliver envelopes in the areas where there was no deliverer.
  • USING local shops as collection points also helped swell the fund. Vic has been organising this for the last 10 years and I know he could always do with more volunteers as he thinks about 2009.
