Driving from Preston to Buxton Road via the harbourside took over an hour today (Saturday). Why? Because noone appears to have thought through what happens when you invite people to the town (for the Spirit of the Sea Festival) and close one of the town's main arteries.
There were no signs prior to the Jubilee Clock to say the harbourside roads would be closed. Hence a lot of people only found this out when they reached the Pavilion end and then had to double back to the the Jubliee Clock and out via Kings Road.
This almighty nose-to-tail traffic jam I sure was just as irritating to our tourists as it was to us. Tourists are not going to want to come back if they have had to spend an hour simply trying to navigate a couple of miles in the town centre.
The Pavilion area desperately needs to be redeveloped, but today showed just how little leeway there is for extra traffic. The proposed hotel, accommodation and marina will bring this amount and possibly even more traffic on a daily basis. The thought of fighting though traffic like today's is simply awful.
