It will be interesting to see just how many people will bother to vote

11:39am Wednesday 16th July 2008

The villagers of Crossways have been forced to have an election to fill the post left by Mr Geoffrey Northcote, who was never elected, but returned unopposed.

The ten members of the village who requested an election did not choose to stand in their own right or even get someone of their choosing to be nominated.

It is a shame that Disgruntled of Crossways (Letters, July 15) was not able to attend the last parish council meeting, as they would have been able to meet both candidates and hear them speak about themselves.

It is also a shame that they were unable to read the Community Section of this paper, which reported on both candidates after the above meeting.

As for canvassing, ringing of doorbells and leaflets through the door, both candidates have been out in the village over the past week.

Unfortunately leaflets cost money to print and this has to be paid for out of the pocket of the nominee. In a parish council election there are no political parties funding the campaign for nominees.

So, apologies if you have been missed but you do know the name and address of both candidates, so you could have written to either of them if you were concerned about the lack of information.

It will be interesting to see after all your fuss how many of the electorate actually are interested enough to vote. Even though part of their council tax has been taken up in the staging of this election and don't forget, just like buses - you might wait 24 years for one and then two come along close together.

Informed of Crossways, Name and address supplied.
