WEYMOUTH'S new look, three-day carnival was under way today with events on the beach.

New organisers have given the carnival an overhaul involving events spread over three days.

It will come to a climax on Wednesday with the procession showpiece transformed from a convoy of motorised floats into a walking parade.

Today has been called Funday Monday with games set up for families on the beach.

Tomorrow, Weymouth Football Club is helping host football on the sand and Wednesday's programme includes the Red Arrows, Spitfires, the procession and fireworks.

Today's events from 10am include races, frisbee throwing, quizzes and a circus skills workshop the chance to learn to juggle.

The last event is a family fancy dress run setting off from the Pavilion at 7pm.

Weymouth FC's football in the community scheme invites girls and boys aged six to 14 for an all day programme tomorrow.

Some Terras players could make it down to see the action, starting at 10am.

The price is £2 with all players receiving a match ticket to watch Weymouth for free if accompanied by an adult and star players from each match will enter a draw to win one of the club's mascot packages. There will also be a sand sculpture competition and a taekwondo demonstration.

On carnival day itself on Wednesday, attractions will include two low-flying helicopters, a search and rescue demonstration, the London Fire Brigade parachute team and the Red Arrows at lunchtime.

Other aerial displays include the Battle of Britain Spitfire display team and the Guinot Wingwalkers.

There will also be a tug-of-war, a fire engine pull and a road traffic collision demonstration by Dorset Fire and Rescue.

The parade - with dozens of walking entrants - will start at 6pm before fireworks at 9.30pm.

At 10pm the carnival draw will reveal the winner of a new Mazda2 car.

Last autumn organiser Weymouth Round Table announced that it was stepping down after 50 years - but the Weymouth Community Volunteers saved the day.

They enlisted the help of Weymouth College, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and businesses in the Weymouth Beach Group to form a new carnival committee.

They made the decision to leave out lorry-based floats due to concerns over health and safety and insurance requirements.

n Weymouth's household recycling centre in Lodmoor will shut at 4pm on Wednesday due to the closure of Preston Road for the event.

The nearest alternative facilities are at Easton Lane, Portland and St George's Road, Dorchester, both open until 6pm.

Weymouth's recycling centre will open as usual on Thursday at 9am.

Don't want to be a "killjoy" but looking at the weather forecast i don't think there will be much in the way of aerial displays this week. But I do hope it all goes well for the Weymouth volunteers.

what is this I am hearing about Weymouth having a "green"carnival-no floats allowed.which half wit came up with that idea?Perhaps someone can explain why we are having the red arrows and a harrier jumpjet if it is a green event.surely you dont have to be a genius to work out it couldnt possibly be green if the aviators attend and therefore perhaps it should be sold as a half priced half arsed event that next year will get proper funding and will be orgnised by a dedicated committee that at least look as if they want our carnival to be a success instead of what we have been presented.it is shameful come on weymouth we deserve better than this.

If you were not ahalf-wit and read the article correctly, the reason given for a walking carnival is for health and safety reasons and the cost of insurance.

Health and Safety - why even bother to turn up, we might trip up and graze our knees. The world has gone mad, risk averse not risk aware. Ok, so some scum chucked coins and injured some people on floats, that'll always happen - gosh they might even throw coins at a slower moving target. I've been to more carnivals than I care to remember, can't see me going to the walking ones - your loss! Wonder if the Bridgewater one will 'walk'? - maybe they'll all carry torches? (not candles cos they might catch afire and burn someone, possibly needing Acriflex!!)

Hope the health and safety brigade issu lifebelts and waders for the walking procession along with lead weighted divers boots to stop them being drowned and blown away seriously its such a shame this attrocious weather is ruining every thing i feel sorry for all concerned as well as the poor farmers who could well lose there harvest if this continues much longer

As with the advice for domestic pets, should 'elf & safety' also advise all spectators & participants stay in doors during the firework display?

May I suggest that you check the Carnival website:
The main change to our new carnival is that this years parade will be "green".
It can be found at: http://www.weymouthc

The carnival has gone down year by year and needs a complete rethink. I admire the groups who took it on because it must be a lot to organise. Health and safety kills everything these days and do you think the stupid coin throwers will stop because there are no vehicles? Some of them need catching and making an example of. Tragically it looks like wind and rain will spoil the day.

I was planning to come down, but seeing some of the comments, I don't think I will bother.

Maybe the girls from Goldfingers could do a parade to spice things up?

It is contradictory to say this is a "green" carnival, and then have the Red Arrows I agree. It says on their website that it costs £20,000 for a full display. However the display is a main feature of the day, and always pull in the crowds. Hundreds come just to see them.
Look at it this way, the Red Arrows will only do so many displays in a year, they will be fully booked, we are NOT going to save the planet by not having the Arrows here. They will use the flying hours somewhere else. It probably won't be that long before they are disbanded anyway, so we might as well enjoy them while we can. The one thing that does annoy me however is some people's inability to hold down a conversation or express a view without getting personal, and calling the planners halfwits. I actually think they always put in a lot of very hard work into the carnival, it's not perfect, but then again nothing is. The weather does have a big factor on it's success. The whole crowd is happier when the sun is shining. It won't be the same without the floats, but they have tried to think of new ideas to supplement that. So instead of getting on their backs BEFORE it has even taken place, I wish them every success.

Gawd, I hope not. Have you seen them? Please don't let them out....they may scare the seagulls.

What a shame the carnival will never be the same without the wonderful colorful floats my family have been coming down from london to weymouth for carnival day for 30 years, the float possession is always the icing on the cake,as we know that thousands of people line the esplade some 20 deep what hope have they of seeing anything, insurance we have been told is to blame i have been told by local float entry's that they pay their own insurance including public liability, it does make me wonder how carnivals like brigewater and others smaller villages can exist with floats and a town like ours that has been running successfully for the last 50 years, and now the main parade has been disbanded, however although my family will not be here this year I wish all the participants a happy successful fun day

Don't blame Health & Safety, blame the idiots who throw coins at the Floats thus putting the insurance cost up!
