PUPILS from the Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester tried their hand at different trades at the Dorset Skills Festival.

Exhibition stands from colleges, businesses and apprenticeship schemes offered demonstrations and advice for 14 and 15-year-olds from across the county.

A moving climbing wall in the armed forces’ area and a mechanical horse sent by Kingston Maurward College were among the most popular attractions during day two of the exhibition at Canford Park Arena near Poole.

Michael Hayward, 14, was among 250 children visiting from the Dorchester school and tried his hand at journalism while touring the exhibition hall.

He visited the stand from Kingston Maurward College’s Academy of Outdoor Adventure and Sports Coaching, taking part in their kayaking demonstration. He said: “It’s been really interesting and it was really good fun.

“This exhibition is a good opportunity and it really makes you think of the things that you want to do after leaving school.”

Today pupils from All Saints School and Royal Manor Arts College are visiting the festival.
