UP to 20 full and part-time jobs could be created by plans to change the use of Weymouth’s former Royal British Legion club into a pub.

The scheme in King Street seeks to change the use of the building to a pub and to replace a window on the east elevation of the single storey building with a door to provide a means of emergency escape.

A report to next Wednesday’s Weymouth and Portland planning and traffic committee says public areas would include a lounge bar at the front at ground floor level with a further lounge bar, pool room and a ladies-only lounge on the first floor.

Within the long rear building would be a large public bar at the rear with seating and a stage. No external smoking area is proposed.

The report adds that, if councillors back the scheme, then five full-time and 15 part-time jobs could be created.

The site was granted a premises licence on August 27 to operate 9am-00:30am Monday-Thursday, 9am-2.30am on Fridays and Saturdays and 11am-11.30pm on Sundays.

A live music licence has also been granted from 7pm-11.15pm Monday-Thursday, from noon until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and from noon until 10.30pm on Sundays. Recorded music has permission from 9am-midnight Monday-Thursday, from 9am-2am on Fridays and Saturdays and from 9am until 10.30pm on Sundays.

The report says that overall, after considering its location, suitability and the previous use of the building, officers feel that the scheme should be approved.

They will recommend councillors to back the development, subject to various conditions.
