A RECENT evening of gentle jazz, held at St John’s Church Hall in Fortuneswell, raised £350 for the Cycling Paramedics.

The concert was arranged by the Macey J Quartet and their supporting guests, professional trumpeter Geoff Miller, who is the leader of Dorchester Big Band, drummer Phil Moore who is described as ‘one of the best stick men around’ and well-known musician Mike Botterill.

The Macey J Quartet was formed when Iris Cracknel, Rob Hoskins, John Clayton and the Revd David Botterill, who are all members of Dorchester Big Band, got together and played during breaks in the Big Band rehearsals and since their formation they have done a considerable number of charity gigs.

At a previous concert this year, along with their guest artistes, local jazz singer Sue Hawker, Geoff Miller, Phil Moore and Mike Botterill, they raised £350 for the Rev Botterill’s D-Day Project.

Sue Hawker has recently appeared at a London jazz club, the Chichester and Marlborough Jazz Festivals and venues in Devon and Cornwall.

Along with sax and flute player Graham Willoughby, a professional musician who has recently come to Dorset from London and drummer and keyboard player, Matt Thurtell, she will be appearing in concert with the Macey J Quartet on Friday at St John’s Church Hall.

This time, Macey J will be raising funds for Portland Bill Coastwatch Station and tickets for the concert, which will start at 7.30pm, cost £5 and can be booked by phoning 01305 820103.

John Clayton said: “The music we play is from the Great American Song Book which contains the work of composers such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Burt Bacharac and is a mixture of ballads, up tempo and Latin American.”

The audience are invited to take along their own food and drinks.

Where were the Cycling Paramedics this year? I thought the idea had been shelved by the Ambulance Service in favour of manning ambulances. The bikes are probably gathering dust somewhere.
