A TRULY fascinating evening at the Old School Village Hall saw some 60 people enjoying a trip down memory lane with local historian Sue Virgin.

Sue brought Upwey’s recent past to life with a splendid collection of slides and commentary, encouraging lots of laughter as we remembered Upwey as it used to be.

Whilst some of us are relative newcomers with no more than 30 and fewer years residence here, others looked back to the forties and fifties – memories were stirred as faces and places appeared on the screen and stories exchanged.

A simple supper was served, the barmen were kept busy, the wash-up brigade did their stuff with a will and the money raised, more than £450, was added to the fund for the St. Laurence church windows appeal.

  • THE above-mentioned windows appeal is coming along nicely with £44,000 in the kitty and the work well and truly under way – only another £16,000 to go.

Visitors to St. Laurence’s will find one or two windows boarded up while our stonemasons work on them, the finished ones look so good now. There isn’t a date yet for final completion, but the work is well on schedule.

  • MEMBERS of Upwey and Broadwey W.I. thoroughly enjoyed a talk by Mrs. Vivienne Endicott at their last meeting, when they heard so much about the life of Enid Blyton - another trip down memory lane.

Next month’s meeting at the Memorial Hall on Thursday, March 12 at 2.30pm will take members overseas to hear about Christmas in Marrakech when Mrs. Christine Shaw will be speaking.

Ladies who may be interested in joining the W.I. are invited to come to a meeting and find out what it’s all about – ring the secretary Peggy Riglar on 812160.

  • On Thursday, March 5, 7.30pm at St. Nicholas and St. Laurence School, the Horticultural Society will be welcoming Lucy Jones from Cattistock who will be speaking about the conservation of herbs – especially the Himalayan varieties. It’s Lucy’s second visit by special request of the members, so clearly well worth going along.

Then on Saturday, March 21, at 2.00pm, the Society is holding its Spring Show at the Memorial Hall – a very special event, the exhibition of flowers and plants is wonderful, not to be missed. Contact Graham Brant on 812276 for details, either as a prospective exhibitor or for information on Joining the Society.

  • COME challenge your brains at the St. Laurence Church annual quiz on Friday, March 13, 7.00pm at the Old School Village Hall – Jan and Patrick promise us some interesting questions, themed to the date, and invite you to make up teams of 4 to 6 people to take part in what is always a thoroughly enjoyable occasion.

Contact them on 812662 for details – tickets are £6.00 per person to include a two-course supper.
