Weymouth's Old Town Hall clock is ticking again

A HISTORIC building in old Weymouth is keeping time again after council engineers intervened.

Members of the Chapelhay Community Partnership were baffled when the clock on the Old Town Hall, which they are set to take over, started working again.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council confirmed engineers had repaired the clock.

Assistant engineer Ray Gray said: “Previously there has been a problem with the clock’s power being turned off mistakenly by hall users.

“However, we have now rectified this problem and hope the clock will remain in good working order for the Chapelhay Community Partnership.”

Mr Gray said work had also been carried out on the hall’s roof and guttering.

The community partnership is planning a launch party once the lease to the hall can be signed. It wants to turn the hall into a heritage centre and community arts space.

The clock has started for a project in which the town will rejoice; and Chaplehay in particular, will re-establish its place in English history. Many a life was given in battles past. More recently, in battles commercial and municipal, much effort was given by the community partners researching and making the case to take charge of this historic building in this historic site; with ward councillors and several other councillors from a number of parties, adding their support to this community project. This despite desires by others to see the building put to commercial use. I am really hopeful for its future.

All good words, just a pity that the building has been left for so many years with no money spent on it, but then the council has a long history of neglect.
