• THERE’S still time to buy tickets for the concert ‘A Celebration of Summer’ being held at St Laurence Church, Upwey on Thursday, July 16 at 6pm.

The Thomas Hardy School Singers are an outstanding choir with a very wide range of music to suit all tastes. Choirmaster, Peter Oakes has designed a programme of instrumental and choral pieces reflecting the last year and it will be a delight.

Tickets are £10 each in aid of the Church windows appeal and the Hub centre for the homeless in Dorchester, and include a glass of wine and nice refreshments. Contact Pru on 812341 or Evelyn 0n 812282.

  • WITH Open Gardens now behind us, the next regular Upwey event looms large on the horizon – the Annual Craft Fair at the Old School Village Hall. It begins on Saturday, July 18 and continues until Sunday, July 26, open all day, every day from 10am-6pm.

There will be 23 exhibitors this year showing a variety of crafts including art, pottery, millinery, woodwork, photography and needlework. Some will be demonstrating their craft and no doubt the potters will have opportunities for you and your children to try your hand at throwing a pot.

A feature of the Show has always been the raffle, with all the prizes donated by the exhibitors. The star prize is a handmade patchwork quilt.

When the show first began, over 30 years ago, ladies of the village made the quilt. Over time, as people moved away or had less time, an individual made it. However, this year the tradition has been revived and seven ladies of the village got together to make the quilt with the experienced help and tutelage of Maggie Howell. They are all delighted with the resulting ‘hearts and flowers’ quilt.

Do come and visit the show. You’ll find lots of interest and, maybe, gifts for friends and family. All the money raised by the raffle and the rest of the Show is used to maintain and improve our village hall.
