A mobile home for Chickerell skate fans

YOUNGSTERS have been hitting the ramps on a mobile skatepark in Chickerell.

They have been making jumps and performing tricks on the pipes in car parks at the Willowbed Hall in Putton Lane and the Wessex Stadium.

The mobile skatepark was introduced to give young people something to do in the summer evenings.

Members of the Chickerell Partners and Communities Together (Pact) panel organised the three evening sessions.

Pact chairman Robbie Dunster said: “We are always getting complaints from residents about young people wandering about aimlessly in groups.

“Older residents often have the misconception that because they see a group of young people, they are going to cause trouble. The young people themselves say they have nothing to do.

“By putting on these events, we hope to give the youngsters something to do, and to show the older residents that a group of young people doesn’t necessarily mean doom and gloom.”

West Dorset District Council has acquired the skatepark and is using it for ‘have a go’ sessions for young people without them having to travel far from their homes.

The Pact panel has arranged for it to come to Chickerell with the help of organisations and businesses in the area.

The skatepark will be in the Willowbed Hall car park tonight until 9pm.

Mr Dunster added: “I would like to thank all of the people who have helped out so far.

“Especially local community developers Wessex Delivery LLP, for allowing the use of their premises at such short notice.

“We hope that this will be the start of something more permanent for all members of society, and that people in this community look forward to helping and understanding each other.”
