THE historic Clavell Tower will be among the treasures of Dorset to be thrown open to the public in mid-September.

The 19th century landmark at Kimmeridge bay features in the line-up of attractions and events for the county’s Heritage Open Days on September 10 to 13.

Thousands of buildings nationwide – many of which are usually closed – will open for free as part of the English Heritage organised extravaganza.

The building preservation charity the Landmark Trust will open the Clavell Tower at Kimmeridge for the weekend.

The building was in danger of falling into the sea but was moved 25 metres inland three years ago. It was also restored and rescued from years of dereliction as part of the project.

Visitors will be able to look around the tower from 10am to 4pm on each day.

A special walk is being lined up to link Portland and Sandsfoot Castles on Saturday, September 13.

The Maritime Heritage Walk, called Castles, Pebbles, Boats and the Sea, will start at Sandsfoot and finish at Portland.

The trek will take in sights along the route and as well as topics such as the sinking of HMS Foylebank in 1940, the world’s first underwater photograph and the sailing events for the 2012 Olympics.

There will also be a Michaelmas Fair on the Saturday in the grounds of Corfe Castle, with craft stalls and demonstrations as well as a family ‘castle quest’ and activities.

There will be free guided tours at Sherborne Castle on Sunday, exploring the history of the castle and a family nature trail.

Shillingstone Railway Station will be open on both days over the weekend.

Visitors will be able to see the progress of a restoration project.
