STUDENTS and technology staff from West Dorset raced their first electric vehicle at a Green Car Competition.

The ‘Eco-fandango’ car was designed and made by the youngsters at Budmouth Technology College at an after-school club with the help of local professionals.

Pupils from Years 9 and 10, along with two Year 8 students, raced the electric-powered machine at the Green Car Competition at the Haynes Museum racetrack near Yeovil.

Accompanied by Bobby, a toy moose mascot, Budmouth’s team was delighted to finish in the top 10 of the national competition, which was open to all schools and colleges.

Budmouth teacher Alan Puleston said: “Coming in 10th out of 14 in our first race was very satisfying.

“The car was on the track for almost all of the four hours endurance test and did not break down once.

“The students were brilliant, working as a team throughout the race.

“The experience enabled them to see at first hand the standard required to be able to compete at a higher level.”

He added: “We are extremely lucky in this area to be supported by so many local engineering companies.

“This financial and practical help makes all the difference to our students.

“Our industrial partners are helping the college to offer a wider range of opportunities where students can experience technology in action.

Luke Brain, team manager from Year 10, said: “The team went in with high spirits and came out happy.

“The whole team worked hard and we did very well, finishing with a great drive from Sam Fry.

“Well done to the team, and we can't wait for the next race.”

The final race of the competition will be held at the Goodwood race circuit later this month.

Engineers from Dorchester Toyota have shown students the latest efficient hybrid car technology.

Dorchester Timber supplied modelling ply, Pankle engines, Manor Marine, Paragon Dorset Asset and Global Marine are financial sponsors for the car.

Specialist aluminium and welding has been undertaken by Park Manufacturing and Sumac.

Dorset Asset has also supported the project with engineering expertise.
