Volunteer Centre Dorset awards evening

PEOPLE who make a difference had their achievements recognised at a county-wide volunteer awards evening.

The selfless individuals were singled out by Volunteer Centre Dorset for the work they do on National Make A Difference Day.

More than 180 volunteers were honoured at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester and music was provided by local band Howling At The Moon.

Compere Alan Knott oversaw proceedings, while local author Kit Berry, author of the Stonewylde series, gave out prizes.

Dorchester Mayor Susie Hosford and main sponsor Gerald Duke thanked the volunteers for their contribution.

Among the recipients were many local residents and organisations.

They were: Volunteers of the Year; Jackie Allen (Dorset Partnership for Older People Project), David Watts (Cavernoma Alliance), Charles Stanley Wood MBE (Dorset Community Action), Maureen Biss (Ridgeway Day Services), Bob Kerr (Campaign to Protect Rural England), Lisa Mitchell (Volunteer Centre Dorset), Gill Wilson (Phab, Cruse), Mike Furse (Dorchester Arts Centre), Vince O’Farrell (First Dorset Credit Union Ltd), Richard Meatyard (Dorset Adult Learning) and Barry Parkin (County Ambulance Service).

Teams of the Year: The Hub, Ridgeway Day Service, Brian Bean and his Chickerell community litter team (CPRE), Southill Centre, Age Concern, WRVS Home Library Services, Dorchester Strollers, Crossways Young People’s Forum.

Young Volunteers: Leon Howe (Lyme Regis Development Trust), Roan Doyle (Dorchester Arts Centre), Jonny Webb (Crossways Young People’s Forum), Stuart Thursfield (Crossways Young People’s Forum), Darwin Culley (Kingcombe Environmental Studies Centre), Adam Harris (Dorchester Youth Extra), Adam Kerslake (Dorchester Youth Extra) and Anthony Coleman (Dorchester Youth Extra).
