It's fancy dress in Dorset for Children in Need


FANCY dress fundraisers will be taking over Dorset today for Children In Need.

The official fundraising party for the South West will be taking place at Weymouth’s Sea Life Park tonight with a live broadcast to the BBC news and evening telethon.

But hundreds of other fun activities and fancy dress days are also being held across the county to raise cash for needy youngsters.

Staff and youngsters at Chipmunks Day Nursery in Buxton Road, Weymouth, have been dressing in pyjamas all week.

Manager Becci Firth said: “It’s been going really well. We’ve always done something for Children in Need on the actual day but this year we decided to dress up all week, as not all children are in on Fridays.

“We’re dressing up today and selling cakes, but also raffling a Pudsey Bear.”

Checkout operator Dave Parsons raised £300 after being waxed at Asda in Weymouth.

Beauty therapists from the Bliss salon performed the honour in front of staff and customers.

The store in Newstead Road will be holding further events today.

Dionne Banbury, 37, a construction student at Weymouth College, will be dressing up as a ‘kinky construction worker’.

Her classmates will also be donning fancy attire and their lecturer Mike Sharpels will dress as a fairy.

Pupils at Broadmayne First School will be wearing funny hats with their non-uniform and the pre-school on site is holding a pyjama day.

‘Bed-head’ will also be the theme at Beechcroft St Paul’s Primary School in Westham, Weymouth, with pyjamas and big hair, while youngsters at Weymouth’s Holy Trinity School will wear ‘spotty’ outfits.

At Conifers Primary School, pupils will wear red, yellow and white ‘Pudsey Bear’ colours, in honour of the event’s mascot. A charity quiz is being held at the school tonight in aid of Children in Need. The event is for adults and will start at 7pm at the school in Radipole Lane.

It follows a week of cake sales at the school in aid of the worthy cause by parents and the school’s friends committee.

On Portland, pupils will be wearing pyjamas for the special day at Underhill Junior School and Brackenbury Infant School.

Staff at Dorset County Council in Dorchester have been holding cake sales in the run-up to the big day and will also be wearing casual clothes today. Workers at Dorchester Travel are selling raffle tickets for a Walt Disney cuddly toy with the draw taking place at 5pm today.

A hairdressing salon will celebrate opening in the town centre by raising money for Children in Need.

Tomigunz barbers, owned by Blondz owner Shaun Hennessy, opens in St Mary Street today with hair cuts available for £5.

All money taken will go to charity.

Staff at Somerfield at Littlemoor in Weymouth will be dressing as schoolboys and girls for the day. They will include Brian Steele and Lewis Mills, who will be dressing up as schoolgirls.

Bon Appetit in St Mary Street, Weymouth, is holding a guess the weight of the cake contest and are selling muffins.

Staff will also be wearing their pyjamas today with all tips going towards the cause.
