Thornlow Prep School raises £800 for charity

WHIZZkids raised more than £800 for charity by putting their business skills to the test.

The young entrepreneurs from Thornlow Preparatory School in Weymouth made the cash as profits from a Dragons’ Den style contest.

Two teams of pupils aged 11 to 13 presented their ideas to businessmen before selling their products.

The Krazy Cardz team, which sold postcards, raised a profit of £580, which they donated to the RNLI.

The Bags4U group sold eco- friendly bags and made a profit of £276 in aid of the Julia’s House children’s hospice.

Thornlow Preparatory School business studies teacher Lucy Clarke said: “I am extremely proud of the way that our young entrepreneurs embraced my unique and pioneering Dragons’ Den business studies course.

“Everyone who entered our Dragons’ Den did so with the same enthusiasm and passion shown by true professionals working within UK business and industry. To raise more than £800 profit in our current economic climate is absolutely outstanding.”

She added: “From concept to launch, marketing to sales, our school’s pupils really demonstrated the value that the youth of today can provide the business world. It was inspiring to watch them in action.”

Pupils pitched their ideas to Simon Jacobs from Brewin Dolphin, Edward Warr from Cartridge Zone and Simon Meers from Cove Yacht Brokerage.

Condor Ferries stocked the Bags4U products on its Fastcat catamaran to the Channel Islands.

Mrs Clarke said: “I would personally like to thank everyone who embraced the initiative, especially our Dragons who donated a lot of their personal time and energy to make the project come alive.

“I would also like to thank the RNLI, Julia’s House and all the local companies including Condor Ferries, The Value House and Wyke Village Stores for supporting our project with the same passion and enthusiasm witnessed by our 12 budding business professionals.”
