Twenty is plenty says Weymouth Pact group

A Weymouth community is appealing for drivers to limit their speed to 20mph.

The group have joined forces with police in an attempt to crack down on speeding by pushing for ‘20 is plenty’ traffic signs.

The East Weymouth Partners and Community Together (Pact) group has been trying to get the signs implemented for the past couple of years and has finally secured the funding for them.

Weymouth and Portland Housing supplied the posts and external funding was secured by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council for the printing of the signs.

It is not a new implemented speed limit but it reminds drivers that 30 miles per hour may be too fast in certain residential roads.

These signs have already been put up in Westham and the East Weymouth Pact feels this has had a huge impact on slowing down traffic.

They cannot be placed on public land but can be put up in people’s front gardens or in the windows of properties.

Chairman of the East Weymouth Pact Mark Ford said: “This morning I saw someone going at least 60 in a 30 zone and that is not unusual.

“It is great that we can come together as a community and help reduce this type of speeding simply by putting a poster up in our window or a sign up in our garden.

“This is helping to make the ward a better and safer place to be for people to live, work and play.”

Councillor for transport and infrastructure at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Christine James added: “It is wonderful to see communities working together to tackle speeding in our residential areas.

“How pleased I am that such a simple and easily achievable idea is having a positive effect.”

East Weymouth Pact discusses local issues at meetings which take place every six weeks.

Over the past 18 months Pact has helped to bring in extra dog warden patrols and a new Police Community Support Officer to the area.

It has also been responsible for new bins on Chapelhay steps, fencing at Portmore Gardens and removal of a damaged phonebox.

Introducing the ‘20 is plenty’ signs is one of the groups latest achievements. The ward of Weymouth East covers Nothe Gardens and The Maltings, Rodwell Avenue up to Portmore Gardens and all of the Chapelhay area.
