Testing the water for Weymouth Harbour Christmas Day swim

FANCY a dip – Lions Club president John Cake tested the water before the Weymouth Harbour Christmas Day swim.

Mr Cake, head of the Weymouth and Portland club, was assisted by the borough mayor Anne Kenwood.

They were taking the temperature of the water before hundreds of people take the plunge on Christmas Day.

“My toe was enough,” John said but conceded that it was warmer in the water than out of it. They measured the temperature of the water at 8C whereas the air temperature was a lowly 5C.

The mayor will start the annual Christmas Day swim across Weymouth Harbour at 11am. Many swimmers attempt the challenge for charity.

Organiser Mark Lockie said: “This is a fun event which individuals and families can enter.

“Some people like to do it for charity so we’re happy to provide sponsorship forms. Registration costs just £5.”

Swimmers can turn up from 10am on the day at the Harbourmaster’s Office to register or register in advance online by visiting www.weymouthlionsclub.co.uk Sponsorship forms, if required, are also available on the website.
