Last chance to join battle for high-speed broadband in Dorset

PEOPLE have until the end of today to join the fight for top quality broadband in Dorset.

Businesses, individuals and groups are being urged to throw their weight behind a campaign for the super fast connection.

BT will be installing hi-tech exchanges and networks in the county to link to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for the 2012 Olympic Games.

But the company says that the county – and especially businesses – need to show that there is a demand for the high-speed service to keep the connection live after the Olympics.

The deadline for representations in an online questionnaire was put back from January 31 until today to give people more time.

Miles Butler, Dorset County Council director of environment, said: “Potentially getting more of Dorset hooked up to high-speed broadband presents one of the big opportunities of the 2012 Games. “The benefit would be shared across Dorset – including rural areas that don’t currently have good web access – not just the host towns of Weymouth and Portland.

“The support of businesses is crucial in providing a strong business case of Dorset’s potential online demand to influence BT and other communication providers to further invest in our digital infrastructure. I would encourage Dorset’s business community to help make this a reality by taking a few minutes to complete the connectivity survey.”

The council and Team Dorset are holding the survey to impress upon BT the need for the broadband. So far about 330 businesses have responded with most indicating a demand for the broadband service.

The fibre optic connection will support data, voice, media and mobile communications during the Games. The council is keen to keep the link as it would bring the quick connection to the county earlier that it might have done otherwise.

All sounds very nice but for individuals the big thing is cost and I have no doubt that there will be a premium for the service, and compared to some people in other areas I have a pretty good service now so any extra would have to be minimal to interest me.

I don’t understand why you say that I was merely stating my viewpoint, as is my right if anybody wants faster speeds then good luck to them as it is I get high 6s or 7s and that is ok for me personally. As I stated there will probably be a premium and I don’t want to pay anymore.

It's aimed more at businesses than individuals I think.

Some firms will not locate in Dorset unless there are decent communications links, so it's important if we want to attract high-tech companies & well paid jobs.

Bt advertises 20Mb Broadband while we in Weymouth and Portland still wait for it with no indication when we will get it . As there is no increase of what we are paying now for bt 8Mb broadband I,m glad some people are happy to pay the same for less . Evenings and weekends the Broadband rate drops considerably .
Lets see the bt 20mb advertised brought in soon .

Where my son lives he is lucky to get 2mb and they can’t get any better until the exchange is updated but he still has to pay for up to 8mb so I think we are pretty lucky in this area.

Just to put the record straight BT charges the same for broadband no matter what rate your your exchange can give you , the only difference in charge is your download amount ie options 1, 2, 3, .
If people are pleased to receive less service for the same money as others I am pleased for them . Personally I believe BT should put their money where their advertising mouth is ie the exchanges .

They might be advertising up to 20mb but that is fairly new my contract and my sons contract is for up to 8mb, and if you care to check with your number your maximum achievable speed is probably less than 8mb, but the crunch point is the key words (UP TO) they could advertise up to 100mb as long as they say up to, all you can do is take what you get.

Hi speed broadband , for couch spuds.

The serious players in the big O will not be using BT links . It not cost effective when youn can get a van with a sat link.

To get a fiber into every home cost money.

BT have put the high speed trunks in and now they have to much bandwidth and they need to sell it to the end user.

Its just another UK rip off.

As mentioned before DCC internet does not come from Dorset !

Thank you for your cut and paste .
My first contract with Bt years ago was for up to 2 Mb but you must know that contracts expire after 18 months at most and yes I do care to check my number which tells me Bt can,t be bothered to upgrade the exchange yet . Thank you for proving what I said that you pay the same rate as 20 Mb broadband then thankfully take what Bt offer and meekly what you can get lol .

BT Broadband Supplemental Has anyone noticed that you can use Bt Broadband talk on your hub phone to phone the USA weekdays for 1.25 pence a minute and yet to phone somewhere in uk weekdays is over 4 times that amount . BT rip off for customers taking what they get lol .

The sad truth is that BT's unwillingness to unbundle their equipment for other providers means that BT holds the monopoly on Fibre Optic. There are other companies who want to put this technology in all around the country but BT have the ability to permit or deny access. I watched a select committee meeting on this very subject and the frustration for one of those providers was clear. He said that his company had stopped tendering for work as there was no longer any point as BT refused to give anybody access.

I am with BT for broadband but it is expensive and they are still a terrible company for customer service. We shouldn't have to campaign for this technology. It is the future of communication and should be rolled out regardless of the white elephant that is the Olympics. Why does it take a sporting event to get a country focussed on improving facilities and environment?

Sorry, bit of a rambling rant but I'm sick of hearing about the whole Olympics thing. It will roll into town, happen, then roll out again. Simple as that. Legacy? What legacy?

You would have to get about 75% of the population of Weymouth and Portland to sign up for superfast broadband to make it viable for any company to install it and I can’t see that happening, but it should be compulsory for all new houses to be plumbed in with superfast broadband and digital TV. All of our services phones/water/gas/ele
ctric should be state run on a not for profit basis but since they have all been sold off to foreigners who want profits we stand no chance we are just passengers on a sinking ship.

I pay for up to 8Mb but am lucky if I get 500kb. We are 2200m from the exchange were it is 8Mb going out. I just dream of speeds more than that :(

I agree with weymouthuk's points about BT and that we shouldn't have to campaign for this infrastructure; it should be rolled out anyway.
.
This has the potential to attract business and skilled jobs to the area offering a high bandwidth service beneficial to the local population that would otherwise not be available for a number of years (if at all). For some the speed of your broadband connection may be suitable now, but what about in 10 years time?

Weymouth is a bit like the last outpost and that is part of its charm, we are behind in everything the same as you have to go out of the county to find a motorway. I am all for improvements but you have to be realistic an improvement in our broadband is going to be a slow thing and superfast is out of the question for households so even 20mb is a pipe dream.
