ROUND Britain walker Seb Green presented more than £32,000 to good causes – and is now off to join the Royal Marines.
Seb was just 18 when he set off on the walk from his hometown of Weymouth to make up for a mistake in his past and raise £20,000 for charity.
Two years to the day from the beginning of the 3,500-mile walk, Seb has handed over a lot more money than he initially set out to raise in a series of presentations at Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester.
To recognise his efforts, Seb was handed some fundraising certificates.
Seb, 20, of Littlemoor, is now studying for his A-levels at Bournemouth and Poole College.
He continues to be an active member of the Territorial Army – serving with 6 Rifles based at Dorchester – and intends to join the Royal Marines this year or next.
He said: “I was ecstatic to have raised so much money.
“I was slightly disappointed when I realised it was all over. If I had the opportunity I would do it all again.”
Seb said he had some ‘wonderful memories’ of the walk, mainly involving the people he met along the route and the kindness that was shown to him.
He added: “I’ve got another challenge in mind for the future which involves a boat and a bit of walking.
“It might have to wait a few years. Watch this space.”
Seb raised a total of £32,622.23 and split the majority of it between the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
He then bought gifts for the county hospital children’s ward and children’s centre, plus made donations to the Army Benevolent Fund, the Fire Fighters Charity and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to fund bursaries for young people in Dorset.
Mary Harper, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award manager for Dorset, said: “The presentations gave us an opportunity to come together and say: ‘You did it’.
“To raise so much over the target is absolutely fantastic.”
Mrs Harper said Seb is due to complete his gold award after completing a military history project on coastal defences. He gathered much of the information for the project during the walk.
Seb is also in demand as a speaker at local groups and hopes to do some presentations about sea safety in conjunction with the RNLI.
