A PAIR of pioneering shock docs are shaking up the medical world.
Dorchester doctors Nick Fernandez and Nick Savva are among the first in the country to use shockwave therapy as treatment for injuries.
They have cured patients whose lives have been made a misery by chronic pain at the newly established Dorset Shockwave Clinic at the Winterborne Hospital in Dorchester.
And orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Fernandez has even used the Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) on himself to cure a niggling tennis elbow injury. He has gone from wincing when shaking patients’ hands to taking up kitesurfing again.
A magic wand emits high-energy soundwaves, otherwise known as shockwaves, to an injured area and triggers the healing process.
The Swiss DolorClast Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy device draws on revolutionary medical technology.
Dr Fernandez said: “The soundwaves stimulate the healing process through tiny air bubbles from the tissue.
“After 10 seconds you get high energy impulses. It feels better straight away.”
ESWT was first developed 20 years ago.
