Sign up to be Weymouth Carnival Queen, says Nina

WEYMOUTH Carnival Queen Nina Rezaei today urged women to sign up for this year’s contest.

She made the rallying cry as organisers revealed details of the 2010 competition.

Enthusiastic women aged 18 and over who live in Weymouth and Portland are being sought to compete for the role of queen and have the chance of leading the parade and taking part in charity events.

The lucky winner will not find out she has won until the morning of carnival, Wednesday August 18.

In a return to the carnivals of old, organisers have decided to switch the crowning ceremony to the day itself to make the event extra special.

Nina, 20, of Upwey, has fond memories of last year’s carnival. Her attendants were Sarah Rowe and Abbie English.

Controversy surrounded the competition last year after organisers tried to scrap it, claiming a carnival queen was an ‘outdated’ idea.

The contest was reinstated after an outcry.

Nina said: “I would say to anyone who is thinking about entering the competition to just go for it.

“You never know – you might win.

“I had a fantastic time and as well as having a lot of fun I won some great prizes and met some lovely people.”

Nina said she was delighted the floats were returning to the procession after a two-year absence.

She said: “I’m behind the floats 100 per cent.”

Printed cards with entry form details will be distributed around the town four weeks before the choosing ceremony.
