CHILDREN at Conifers Primary School in Weymouth are enjoying maths lessons with a twist – they get to bring their parents in with them.

The ‘Bring An Adult To Maths’ lessons have been running over the past term at the school and will continue to run for the next couple of weeks.

Last year the school held a maths workshop for the parents only, but this time Year 5 teacher Julie Seamark, who is organising the lessons, said it should be more effective teaching the parents with the children. Miss Seamark said the main idea of the lessons was to raise the profile of maths.

“We thought it would be a really good idea to invite the parents into our maths lessons so they could see what we actually do and learn the strategies we teach.

“Last year we had a maths workshop with just the parents after school and although that was a success, we thought it would be even better for them to come in with their children.

“That way the parents can see how we interact with the pupils as well.

“It’s going really well and the children have been getting really excited about bringing their mums and dads in.”

On Monday the children of Year 5 and their parents were taught division using a new method called ‘chunking’.

Rosemary Ford, mum to nine-year-old Leah, was in the maths session.

She said: “It’s important to understand how they are learning.

“That way, if they go wrong when they are doing their homework I can show them why. ”

Pupil Julia Drewnowicz, 10, said she thought the ‘Bring An Adult To Maths’ was a great idea.

She said: “It’s good because if my homework is really hard, my mum could show me. Maths isn’t my favourite subject.”
