Pet cat left for dead after savage attack in Weymouth

A CHILDREN’S pet was savagely kicked and left for dead in a vicious attack.

The 14-month-old cat is fighting for its life after losing an eye and suffering multiple fractures.

Alfie belongs to the Cummings family in Weymouth and mum-of-six Rachel said she believes her pet was subject to a serious case of animal cruelty. Police are investigating the attack and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He was discovered covered in blood by Mrs Cummings, 32, of Lynch Road on Saturday night.

He was taken to Fielding and Cumber Veterinary Surgeons on Chickerell Road for emergency surgery.

He is still in a critical condition and may require a further operation.

Mrs Cummings said that her children were distraught after seeing their pet in such pain.

She said that thinking about the suffering her pet is going through is ‘very upsetting’. She added: “To think that our cat has actually been kicked with such force is just horrible.

“The vet said it couldn’t have been a car accident because there would have been injuries to his body.

“It seems like he has literally been booted.

“When I found him in the kitchen there was blood everywhere and his eye was hanging out.

“My two boys were absolutely sobbing and my three youngest daughters were in tears.

“I am just so angry at what somebody could do.

“It is just disgusting.”

Julie Rickin, the veterinary surgeon who operated on Alfie, confirmed the cat’s injuries consisted of a cracked palate, a broken jaw and a lost eye.

She added: “He has a severe trauma to his head and he’s had to have extensive surgery.

“Something would have had to hit him on his head with quite a high speed.”

Mrs Cummings admitted she did not have any pet insurance and is concerned that she will not be able to fork out for expensive veterinary bills.

The family named the cat Alfie after their local chippie, Alf’s Fish and Chips shop, at Fiveways.

Animal rescue centre Paws, which has a cat shelter in Weymouth, has already come forward to donate £50 towards the fees.

Chairman Myra Moyse from Paws described the circumstances as ‘horrendous’ and added that if the charity can help, ‘it always will’.

Dorset Police are appealing for witnesses and if anyone has any information they should contact 01305 222222.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “The vet has confirmed the injuries were consistent with it being kicked.

“The cat has had an eye removed and sustained fractures to its mouth and is critically ill.

“We’d appeal for anyone who witnessed anybody mistreating a cat to come forward.”

If they can do this to a cat, what would they do given the chance with a human, they need catching and locking up, quick.

What a load of morons out there !!! I wonder if somewhere someone has this on camera phone as I am sure it was done for "kicks" if you'll pardon my pun . May I suggest that if the culprits are found they have the same "kicking" as that poor cat.Even that would not be enough punishment, lock them up and throw the key away and let them ROT !!!!

This is the sort of cruelty that led to a fawn being kicked to death last summer. If this is children too then they are severely disturbed and could start on other children next. If they are caught they MUST NOT be let off with a caution which is what usually happens. I had to intervene once when a young man set his dog on a cat.- as a small lady this was a bit scary but people have to make a stand
against this sort of thing: zero tolerance!

This has actually ruined my day! I hope poor Alfie makes a good recovery from such a traumatic act. I would be absolutely devastated if this happened to one of my cats. I'd be up for donating towards his operation, how does one go about this?

Whoa there! Get a grip people. There's no evidence that cat has been kicked by anyone, it's just a guess! Cat's get into all kinds of mischief, it may not have been 'run over' but "Something would have had to hit him on his head with quite a high speed." Perhaps a car?

Portland Worldwide- what a prat you are! who the hell do you think you are judging and criticising other people for the interests they enjoy and support. The point you have clearly missed is that animals generally are unable to speak or defend for themselves- Unlike some humans like you! who sprout off without considering and respecting other peoples views and opinions. Perhaps in future you could show some respect and stop being a bigot rather than manipulating this blog to serve you own interests. On a positive note it is very pleasing to read of so many caring folk out there who are prepared to help.

Well said. I can't believe the Tory's want to make this hideous 'sport' legal again. I would be a floating voter but this makes my decision a whole lot easier.

As for this story, it is very depressing but heartening to read the comments.

I think getting back to the story at hand, some sick people have done this to this animal. Whether it was a cat, or a person that this happened to, its very wrong and the people that did it should be caught and punished.

Please don't turn this story into a political vehicle - this is a horrific story.

I hope they catch whoever did it (the vet did say it wasn't a car accident) and I wish Alfie a speedy recovery.

As someone else pointed out, it is only conjecture that this was an attack, it could have been a car or motor-cycle. I am reminded of the case of Dec's flowers a couple of weeks ago 'strewn around the Borough Gardens' until we found the real story. Judge not lest yea be judged.

They were scattered around top of town car park, not Borough Gardens' so even with the facts, people still get it wrong!

It is not conjecture that this cat was attacked, it is an experts conclusion.

Portland william and Worldwide - people like you make me sick. There are too many people who share your same ignorant view, that humans have some divine right to be treated better than "mere" animals, whose lives should not be valued in the same way as our own. This attack is sick and the individuals involved seriously disturbed. The fact they did this to a cat should make no difference to the severity of their punishment (if they are ever caught) or the seriousness with which the police and public should take this matter.

Oh and as for putting Alfie down - an animals life is just as important to them as your life is to you. I'd love to know why people like you seem to think there are different levels of importance when it comes to a living, breathing being. Animal or not. Why do you think you should have the right to "judge" whether or not someone or something is important enough to live or not?

I hope to God you have no pets of your own.

I wish Alfie a good recovery and hope he can get over this trauma and enjoy life as a cat again.

Nobody was moaning, I should imagine the vast majority of pet owners don't have insurance, like many home owners don't have insurance.
But is that the ONLY important thing you picked out of this story?
The fact that a human being did this to an animal is less worrying than the cat having no insurance?
God help us.

IF poor Alfie was attacked someone knows the mindless idiots who did this, please report to the police or you are a cowardly as the culprits themselves, I personally couldnt sleep at night if I knew the person who did this.
Otherwise if this was a bike or a car accident if you did know you hit a cat why didnt you check on it and take it to the vets?
Get well Alfie, I know how heartbreaking it is to have a injured cat though an accident.
