FORMER Dorchester and Scotland international striker Jackie Henderson has died following a short illness aged 73.
The Glasgow-born Henderson - whose Football League career included spells with Portsmouth, Wolves, Arsenal and Fulham - joined the Magpies in 1967 from Poole Town, then a division above Western League Dorchester in the old Southern League.
He was an influential figure in player-manager Bob Forrest's Western League side for four seasons and scored 44 goals in 134 appearances before retiring in 1971 - signing off with the winning goal in his last game for the club at Devizes in April that year.
Forrest recalled that in those days Dorchester were lucky to be able to afford a player of his calibre.
"He could still play a bit when he came to us and the lads took to him straight away because even though he was a well known international there was nothing at all big-headed about him," he said.
The funeral service takes place at Poole Crematorium on Friday at 2pm.
