SIX nationally acclaimed children's authors are taking part in a reading conference being staged in Bovington next month.

Philippa Pearce, author of the children's classic Tom's Midnight Garden, will join award-winning writers Kevin Crossley-Holland, Celia Rees, Philip Reeve, Susan Gates, Nicholas Tucker and illustrator Giles Andreae.

The reading conference - titled Gateways to the Imagination - is the 14th annual Dorset Teaching Reading Conference - a well-established regional event promoting children's literature.

The conference takes place at Bovington Middle School on Saturday, November 13, and will be opened by Nicholas Tucker.

Conference organiser Philip Browne of Dorset County Council said: "This year's programme is particularly exciting and offers an unmissable opportunity for anyone involved in promoting literacy to hear nationally acclaimed writers for children talking about their work.

"Our conferences are always inspiring and, thanks to the support of Puffin Books and other publishers, we have been able, once again, to secure the involvement of leading writers for young people."

The event will include a bookstall, publishers' displays and plenty of opportunities for book signings by the visiting authors.
