MURDER BY NUMBERS (15)

THRILLER about two students - Richard Haywood (Ryan Gosling) and Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt) - who commit a murder just for the thrill of it. They choose a random victim, then plant evidence on the body to point the police towards local drug dealer Ray (Chris Penn). Tenacious detective Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) is charged with solving the crime. All clues point to Ray, and rookie partner Sam Kennedy (Ben Chaplin) agrees, but Cassie knows Richard and Justin are responsible and vows to stop them. RATING PPP

MONSTER'S BALL (15)

Halle Berry gives an Oscar-winning turn in this perceptive and emotionally raw study of grief and sexual longing. Billy Bob Thornton plays Death Row prison guard Hank Grotowski, who has been brought up as a racist bigot by his ailing papa but has to re-evaluate his prejudiced outlook when he meets Leticia Musgrove (Berry), the wife of a recently executed inmate. RATING PPPP

THE TIME MACHINE (PG)

Guy Pearce stars as the time-travelling boffin in this latest rather slow adaptation of the HG Wells classic. He meets beautiful slave Samantha Mumba on his travels and resolves to free her from the Morlocks and their leader Uber-Morlock (Jeremy Irons). The special effects are impressive. RATING PP

SNOW DOGS (PG)

PEDIGREE family entertainment, with a silly plot and lots of laughter as family dentist Ted Brooks (Cuba Gooding Jr) travels to Alaska to find he has inherited a rundown shack and a team of prize-winning sled dogs with most expressive faces. Grumpy local Thunder Jack (James Coburn) gets lost in the snow and bar owner Barb (Joanna Bacalso) helps Ted win everyone's respect, including that of the dogs. Daft but fun. RATING PPP

STAR WARS: EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES (PG)

THE young Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is the gifted apprentice of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), who, after an attempt the life of on Senator Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman), is left to protect her, which he does rather too well by falling in love with her, breaking a Jedi rule and setting the secene for the emergence of Darth Vader. Also in action are Ian McDiarmid, Christopher Lee and Ewan McGregor. RATING PPPP

SPIDER-MAN (12)

TOBEY MAGUIRE is the high school student inside the form-fitting suit who gains super powers after being bitten by a GM spider. Kirsten Dunst is the girl who falls for Spider-Man but, like Superman's girl, fails to recognise his more mundane alter ego. Willem Dafoe is Spider-Man's manic and evil foe, the Green Goblin. RATING PPPP

BIG FAT LIAR (PG)

PAUL GIAMATTI is the BGL of the title - an egomaniac movie mogul whose world begins to spiral downwards after he steals the English essay of a determined young Frankie Muniz. Big fat fun. RATING PPP

ROLLERBALL (15)

REMAKE of the violent hit movie of the 1970s which starred James Caan. This outing, starring Chris Klein, L L Cool J, Rebecca Romjin-Stamos and Jean Reno, is far less successful and is unlikely to notch up a victory at the box office. RATING P

40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS (15)

ATTRACTIVE Josh Hartnett gets disillusioned with lurve and vows to stay celibate for, well, 40 days and 40 nights, at which point Shannyn Sossamon appears...and tests his resolve. RATING PP
