Weymouth Cricket Club has been rocked by the resignation of

chairman Paul Webb just weeks before the start of the new season.

The former Seasiders batsman said today that he had decided to quit because he did not have the full support of his committee.

It is believed that a rift had developed between the chairman and Cricket manager Adie Voss, although Mr Webb refused to discuss details.

He said: "Recent episodes have become counter productive and, despite efforts to resolve them, there remains a split on the committee.

"As chairman I did not have the full support of the committee and therefore felt I had no option but to resign in the hope that the club can move forward."

He added: "This was not what I wanted to do but I wish Weymouth Cricket Club good luck both on and off the pitch in the future."

Voss, now in his third year at the club, confirmed that there had been 'a difference of opinion' between himself and the chairman.

He added: "Unfortunately there was a problem that meant it was impossible for the two of us to work together within club, but it's a private matter that has now been dealt with.

"All we want to do is put the matter behind us and get on with playing cricket

and taking the club forward."

But the resignations might not end there with stalwart Seasiders' president John Cake considering his position with the Redlands-based outfit.

Mr Cake explained: "During what has been a most difficult period for the management committee of the club, a split has developed with some members not backing chairman Paul Webb and I believe this lack of support has led directly to his resignation.

"In my opinion, Paul has always acted with complete honesty and integrity and has always had the best interests of Weymouth Cricket Club at heart.

"Personally I fully support him in all his actions and, as a consequence of what's happened, I am now considering my own position of president."

The club's management committee will elect a new chairman during an extraordinary meeting to be held at the Wessex Stadium tonight.
