EX-TOWN goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall became a member of a very select club last night as he scored during Notts County's win at Mansfield in the Worthington Cup.

The 23-year-old hammered home a terrific free-kick to give his side a 4-1 lead much to his and team-mates disbelief.

It was only the keeper's third game for his new club and while he had hoped to make an early impression, this wasn't quite the way he had intended it.

Speaking to the Evening Advertiser last night, the slightly bewildered keeper said: "We had a free kick about 10 to 15 yards inside our own half.

"I just stepped up and gave it a real whack downfield. One of their defenders has jumped up along with our striker and their keeper came rushing out.

"But the ball's cleared all of them and bounced into the net. I couldn't believe it. It's not the sort of thing you prepare for as a goalkeeper. I know it's been done in the past but you never think it wil happen to you.

"As soon as the ball went in, all the lads came rushing towards me. To be honest, I was embarrassed more than anything I think.

"But then in the second half I've made a real mistake. As I went to throw the ball out my hand caught one of our players.

"The ball's dropped to one of their lads and he made it 4-3. Fortunately we hung on for the win. It was certainly a night I'll never forget."

With County safely (and spectacularly) into round two, Mildenhall's thoughts turned to Swindon Town.

He said: "A few of the Town lads phoned up to congratulate me about the goal, as well as taking the mickey of course. I'd just like to wish them well in their game at Wolves."
