FED-UP residents say they cannot wait for new rules to come into force that will prevent caravans parking overnight at a Weymouth beauty spot.

Homeowners in Bowleaze Coveway say they regularly see caravan users parking in their road overnight, littering and using the nearby bushes as toilets.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council said it would soon begin enforcing new rules to prevent overnight parking in the area, but for locals the changes cannot come soon enough.

Retired research scientist David Clark said he was among those looking forward to the enforcement of new rules preventing overnight parking outside his home.

He said: “There are no services or facilities there for overnight parking and there are no facilities for people to dispose of sewage. I often see people dumping dubious materials down the drain.

“We used to have two permanent residents living here in caravans with TV aerials on their caravans. They also had dogs.

“I’ve seen people coming out of caravans and going into bushes with toilet rolls first thing in the morning, which is not very pleasant.”

Mr Clark, 70, added: “Considering we pay quite high council tax here we don’t seem to get much for it.

“We also have a problem here with buses and lorries having to mount the pavement to pass each other.

“I think the council should add broken double yellow lines at points to act as passing points.”

Café Bistro owner Jim Sweetham said he was annoyed by caravan users dropping litter and other problems they caused in the area.

He said: “The biggest issue is with all the parking spaces being taken up – it doesn’t allow local people to come here and park.

“Caravan users dump their rubbish here and put out barbecues on the pavement that people have to walk around.”

A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council said: “A ban on parking between midnight and 6am will soon come into effect along Bowleaze Coveway. This has already been approved by councillors, and signs will be placed along the length of Bowleaze.”
