THE summer season has officially opened with the installation of this year’s well-dressing under the arches at Upwey Wishing Well.

Working not quite round the clock, Maggie Cooke and her band of helpers completed the scenes that illustrate the centenary of the Guide Association, just at the right time for the Morris side to dance it into its place with all due ceremony and for some of the ladies of Island Voices choir to sing its praise.

The scenes depict the joys of camping – not actually raining – with tents pitched, gadgets made and cooking over the campfire. It’s a terrific reminder of those happy camping days!

If you enjoyed guiding, or even if you were never involved in it, do try to find time to come to Upwey and see the well-dressing, and drop into the cafe for good refreshment.

NOT much happened at the annual parochial church meeting of St Laurence’s.

Pru Bollam and Paul Sutcliffe were re-elected as churchwardens, satisfactory progress on the restoration of the windows was reported and news of other aspects of the management of the church was received.

Particular mention was made of St Laurence’ support for the excellent street pastors who have been making such a welcome and supportive appearance in Weymouth on Friday and Saturday nights.

The next date on St Laurence’ calendar is the Spring Sale on Saturday, May 15 open from 10.30am to midday in the Old School Village Hall.

There will be a wide variety of plants for sale – lots of veg as we all get greener, flowers to grow in borders and beds, young shrubs and some gardeners’ essential bits and pieces.

Cakes for sale and a raffle will add to the fun.

THE Wessex Research Group will be meeting at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, May 12 at 7.30pm.

Derek Thorne of the YogaLiving Community will be speaking. His subject is “Who am I? Knowing your true nature”.

All are welcome, the cost is £4.
