NEXT year is the 50th anniversary of the first collaboration between keyboard wizard Rod Argent and exquisitely breathy singer Colin Blunstone.

Since then they’ve had massive success with The Zombies in the 1960s, formed other top bands and undertaken solo projects.

It was about a decade ago that they got together again to reform The Zombies, but they certainly aren’t only looking backwards. At Kyps they introduced new guitarist Tom Toomey and showcased a forthcoming new album. But it was with the more familiar material that the audience was wowed.

With veteran 68-year-old bassist Jim Rodford still going strong and his son Steve on drums, this five-piece show no signs of slowing down. The Argent/ Blunstone axis began proceedings in a low-key way before the band rocked in with I Don’t Believe In Miracles. We were treated to a series of ’60s Zombies hits and a good selection from the ‘lost’ (but thankfully later found) 1967 album Odessey And Oracle.

The likes of Time Of the Season, a jazzy Say You Don’t Mind and a rocking Hold Your Head Up left us wanting more. We were sated by, of course, She’s Not There, the recovery of God Gave Rock And Roll To You from Kiss and the traditional show closer Summertime.

It’s good to see them back – long may they continue.
