POLICE have denied that one of their officers asked a football fan to take off her England shirt following an investigation.

Charity shop worker Tracey Rose, 30, said she was walking down Dorchester Road when the police officer approached her and told her to go home and change the shirt.

Miss Rose, 30, protested and said she would be late for work and the policeman allegedly told her to cover up the badge at work and sent her on her way.

But police deny that any officer was on Dorchester Road at that time.

Assistant Chief Constable Adrian Whiting said: “We have now checked all the movements of all of our police vehicles because we have an electronic locating system on them.

“None of our cars was in that area at that time as far as we are aware.

“We have also checked with the Transport Police, the Ministry of Defence Police and Portland police, all of whom assure us they were not in that area at the time either.

He added: “I can say quite categorically that Dorset Police has no policy to restrict the wearing of our national flag and similar emblems and certainly not during the World Cup competition.”

Dorset Police will be continuing their investigation into exactly what happened and will be talking to Miss Rose again.

The police want to check how certain she is that the person who spoke to her was a policeman.

Miss Rose maintains that it was a white police car with police stripes down the side and a policeman who stopped her.

She said: “It was definitely a policeman and a police car.

“I don’t know if I will wear my England top for the World Cup. It’s put me off really.”
