AMONGST all the summer fetes and fairs, the folk at St Laurence’s were delighted with the result of the Summer Fair last month which raised over £1,000 for church funds.

Running from 10am to 2pm, there was a steady stream of visitors.

The cakes, as always, quickly sold out, there were some really good bargains to be had and people went home laden with plants and other goods.

Upwey and Broadwey WI had a very good attendance at their June meeting with Mrs Sheila Williams in the chair.

‘Jerusalem’ was sung, but the ladies had a spot of trouble finding a tape for the timing – the search continues!

The business matters were quickly dealt with, including orders being taken for Christmas calendars – how time flies by. And respects were paid to the memory of Mrs Mary Hayward a long standing member and past president who had died recently.

The speaker was Mr Morton who told of his 40 years in the media on newspapers and TV, with many anecdotes to illustrate the life of a journalist. In retirement he lives in Weymouth quite happily apart from coping with our traffic chaos – surely a small thing after his exciting work.

Next month’s meeting will be on Thursday, July 8 at 2pm in the Memorial Hall.

ONE of Upwey’s most popular events takes place next weekend, July 10 and 11, our Open Gardens when more than 20 owners will be inviting visitors to come into their gardens and enjoy a wide variety of plants and features.

There’s plenty of parking in the field at the bottom of Elwell Street, which also makes a very good starting point for your tour of Upwey’s gardens. There you can buy your programme, which allows you entry to the gardens, with a map, at a charge of £3.50 for adults, accompanied children free. This programme will allow you to come back a second time if you can’t get all the way round in one go.

Just a note – there are two weddings at St Laurence’s Church on the Saturday afternoon, so please park at the designated place on that day and not in the church car park.

On Sunday afternoon, the Church will be open for you to visit, take a rest and enjoy the flowers.

There are teas and refreshments at points all around the village, an art exhibition in the Old School, our popular sculpture trail and your chance to have a go at making a pot. And you can buy raffle tickets for our famous Upwey quilt which will be on display in one of the gardens.

We shall look forward to seeing you, sunshine (not quite) assured, but we do promise you a lovely afternoon’s outing, anytime between 2pm-6pm on either or both days.
