WEYMOUTH’S Abi Bayley was the leading lady at the Portland 10 Road Race, beating Jenny Moore (Wells City Harriers) and Becky Griffiths (Poole Harriers) to the line.

On his first time of entry in the race, postman Steve Way (Bournemouth AC), 35, delivered the goods and was the winner of this year’s run.

He had some familiarity with the course as he won the British Masters Championship over the same island route last year.

Leading all the way, he was well ahead of the field on the completion of the first loop and, although he considered the course excellent and challenging, he said: “I was extremely happy to have the wind behind me as I tackled the final hilly ascent to the finishing line.”

Club colleagues Ian Habgood and Mark Hargreaves, a previous winner, were in second and third places.

The runners were flagged on their way by long-time marshal Mark Owen.

Prizes were presented by Nina Seymour – of Compass Eastates LLP, the new owners of Southwell Business Park and main sponsors of the event – and Les Ames, president of the Royal Manor of Portland AC, the organisers of the annual event.

Race organiser Andy De Havilland said: “It was an excellent morning and we had a near record entry with 291 runners completing the course despite the warm and windy conditions.”
