A new award is being launched to recognise people who have made a special contribution to the Jurassic Coast.

The Jurassic Coast Award is for anyone who has shown an outstanding dedication to the conservation and enhancement of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site, whether professional, amateur or volunteer.

Awards will be presented to two individuals who have made innovative and meaningful contributions through education, science, conservation or the arts.

This could be through research, community involvement or other activities.

This year, the two individually sculpted awards will be created by the artist and sculptor Gary Breeze, with sponsorship from the Fine Family Foundation.

Sam Rose, Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site team leader, said: “Since the Dorset and East Devon Coast was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001, many, many people have put a great deal of energy, time, commitment and enthusiasm into helping to conserve, protect and present it.

“I am delighted that the Fine Family Foundation has decided to recognise the contribution that some of these outstanding individuals have made through the creation and sponsorship of this award scheme.”

The inaugural Jurassic Coast Awards will be presented at the annual Jurassic Coast Seminar on Thursday, December 16, at Bridport Arts Centre.
