Car ends up in West Bay harbour

A CAR ended up in West Bay harbour as the driver was trying to manoeuvre his boat and trailer.

It is understood the driver of the 4x4 Mitsubishi vehicle had been trying to get the boat into the water when the accident happened on Saturday morning.

No one was hurt but the car was damaged. Assistant harbourmaster Sam Dell said as the driver tried to roll the trailer down the slipway to launch his boat, his steering locked and his brakes didn’t respond. The vehicle slid into the harbour, dragged by the boat and trailer, and was pinned between the slipway and a pontoon.

Mr Dell said: “We managed to get the boat by the pontoon but it was taking on water so we had to get a pump into it.

“The car was partly submerged and was damaged in its fall.”

Oh, no classic mistake of expecting a modern car to behave normally without the ignition on. A bit like the man who used to turn his engine off when he went down hills, to save petrol or so he thought; One day he turned the igntion off too, the steering lock came on and he veered off the road down a hill!! (true story).
