FOOTPATH maintenance has been at the top of the Upwey Society’s agenda this year and a small party gathered recently to get to work on the path leading from the Wishing Well up to the top of Windsbatch Hill. This is now in good condition.

In the early summer a map had been produced showing all the footpaths in and around the village, copies of which are available from John Huggins on 813243 or Dave Mountjoy on 812897. In due course, when a suitable arrangement has been made, the map will be displayed along with relevant supplementary information.

Meanwhile, we are working our way along the footpaths clearing overgrowth, mending stiles and improving surfaces. John would be delighted to hear of anyone who’d like to join the working parties.

ESSENTIAL WORK to resurface Church Street has begun with all the usual inconveniences and will take three weeks.

During this time there is access to the Wishing Well, the Riverhouse, the Old School Village Hall and St. Laurence Church and, of course, residents along the way.

GARDENERS of Upwey and Broadwey enjoyed a chatty evening at their last meeting and are looking forward to the next meeting, on Thursday, November 4.

The talk will be on garden design by a speaker from the Gold Club – members of Poundbury and Sherborne garden centres.

All visitors are welcome at the general meetings of the Horticultural Society at St. Laurence and St. Nicholas School, Dorchester Road, on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30pm.

USERS OF Upwey Old School Village Hall will be delighted to hear that the committee has bought a complete suite of new china and cutlery.

A very welcome replacement for the old stuff which was, not to put too fine a point on it, past its best.

BONFIRE NIGHT is, as ever, on Friday, November 5, in the field opposite the bottom of Elwell Street, courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Silver of Upwey House.

There will be a huge bonfire and a splendid display of fireworks, starting at 6pm. Bring the children, well-wellied, to enjoy a lovely Upwey event.

We’re keeping prices the same as for the last two years at £3 for adults and £1 for children and there will be hot dogs on sale.

THE WI meets at the Memorial Hall at 2.30pm on the second Thursday of the month and welcomes visitors.

At their October meeting, Mrs V Stevens spoke about icons and told the stories of highly valued religious paintings and objects largely of Russian orthodox origin.

At next month’s meeting on Thursday, November 11, Pauline Crump will be regaling the members with tales of Weymouth as a seaside resort in times past – there’s certainly a wide variety of interest there.

AND LASTLY, don’t forget the local history exhibition which Sue Virgin is mounting at the Memorial Hall on the Saturday, November 20 and Sunday, November 21,10am-4pm each day.

As at previous similar events, Sue will have gathered together and put on display a great collection of Upwey and Broadwey memorabilia spanning most of the 20th century. Entry free, refreshments.
