IN his criticism of Cllr John Walsh (The Bolton News, October 16), Cllr Cliff Morris asks for examples of pet policies they had pursued to the detriment of the town’s finances.
Here are a couple.
During the short period when the Liberal Democrats controlled the council, they changed the collection of the grey bin residual waste to fortnightly.
In response to a small minority of protests, Cliff Morris promised to return to weekly collections. This was done solely to catch votes and succeeded in returning Labour to power at the subsequent election.
The change back from fortnightly to weekly grey bin collections then increased the cost of the refuse service.
There was no increase in Council Tax in April, 2008. This was another trick to retain power at the following election in May.
If Labour had increased Council Tax, at least to cover the cost of inflation, they would have had the additional income and would not now need to cut so many public sector jobs. The words pot, kettle and black come to mind.
