A FESTIVAL celebrating the art of Dorset Knob throwing is in the final shortlist in the hunt to find England’s most quirky and unique event.

The Dorset Knob Throwing event that takes place at Cattistock has made it through to the final 10 in the Where Else But England Awards 2011.

It will now vie with the likes of snail racing in Norfolk, eel throwing in Cambridgeshire and the world egg throwing championships in Lincoln-shire for the top award.

Nigel Collins, chairman of the organising committee for the Dorset Knob Throwing and Frome Valley Food Festival, said the nomination came as ‘a bit of a surprise’.

He said: “Hopefully, we’ll get a few votes locally.

“It think what’s nice about these awards is all of the events are quintessentially English and it’s absolutely fantastic that as a nation we do all these quirky things.”

The Dorset Knob Throwing event started up three years ago as essentially a bit of fun to raise money for four local organisations – the village cricket club, Maiden Newton and Cattistock Football Club, the village playing fields and Savill Hall.
