A BREATHTAKING aerobatic duo, death-defying wingwalkers and replica vintage planes recreating a First World War dogfight are among the amazing displays that will fill the skies above Weymouth.

Organisers have released more details about the Weymouth Carnival and Air Show 2011 which will be featuring one aerial display an hour throughout the day on Wednesday, August 17.

There is a greater emphasis on aerial displays as the committee seeks to widen carnival’s appeal, attract big sponsors and put the extravaganza on a level with the country’s big air shows.

All the usual attractions, and more, are planned before the grand procession featuring motorised floats, walking entries and several marching bands.

Organisers are also meeting to discuss next year’s event which falls during a significant time between the end of the Olympic Games and the beginning of the Paralympics.

Carnival chairman Shaun Hennessy said: “We’re excited by it. We have some top display teams on their way. The idea is to have a display every hour from 10am to 5pm with each display lasting about 20 minutes. It puts us on a par with other air shows around the country.”

Mr Hennessy added: “We feel it will be money well spent. We’ve already had a lot of contact from people outside of Weymouth excited about a big air show.”

Among the displays confirmed, apart from the show-stopping Red Arrows, are the Breitling Wingwalk ers, the world’s only formation wingwalking team. ‘Crazy flying’ will come courtesy of O’Brien’s Flying Circus.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight features a Lancaster bomber, a Hurricane and a Spitfire. The Twister duo is a ‘breathtaking’ formation aerobatics display team who do formation loops, rolls and gravity-defying zoom climbs.

The days of the First World War will be recreated by the Great War Display Team involving two Junkers CL1s from the German side while a SE5 and a Sopwith Triplane will keep up the British end.
