A VERY jolly crowd, who got steadily jollier as the evening went on, enjoyed a ‘Call my Bluff’ wine tasting at the Old School.

The master bluffers, John O’Driscoll, John Huggins and Pat Dunne, presented their versions of a variety of wines, describing fulsomely characteristics of terroir, bouquet, palate and all the rest. The assembled company then had to try them and decide who was telling the truth. Much hilarity ensued.

The company left late well- watered and well-fed.

MORE soberly at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting of St Laurence’s, Pru Bollam and Paul Sutcliffe were re-elected as church wardens and the treasurer gave good account of the financial position which he deems just healthy enough.

Work on the restoration of the windows, for which a large appeal was launched nearly three years ago, is in its final stages, every single window having had to have some attention. Now there’s work to be done on the roof of the south aisle.

The church yard is looking particularly beautiful and restful at this time of year: a team of good gardeners keep it going well.

THERE are great celebrations for the Royal Wedding going on at both the Old Ship Inn on the Ridgeway and at the Royal Standard on Dorchester Road.

Ring Danny at the Ship on 812522 and Phil at the Standard on 812558 for information. It’ll be good wherever you go.

IT’S well-dressing time again. You are invited to come and help to create the pictures for the panels which hang behind the Well, using flowers and leaves, seeds and twigs, pieces of bark, scraps of wool and any other natural materials.

It’s the most relaxing and enjoyable pastime, just for a short while, or longer, in pleasant company. Lots of helpers are needed and, as always, the theme is secret until we start work.

The finished pictures will be ceremonially paraded to the Well, with rustic celebrations, on Saturday, April 30th, around midday.

ON Saturday, May 7, at the Old School, St Laurence Church is holding their annual plant sale and bazaar, with cakes and books and bric-a-brac and, of course, a splendid raffle.

It’s open from 10.30am to midday, there will be Jackie’s bacon butties, coffee and cakes to keep you spending.

ALSO on that day, at the Memorial Hall from 2pm, the Upwey and Broadwey Horticultural Society are holding their plant sale.

Gardening bric-a-brac, more cakes, a tombola and good home-made refreshments to sustain.
