A SCHOOL needs your help to make their dream of a pond and nature area into a reality.

Southill Primary School is one of the 21 finalists in the School Build Challenge.

They are all trying to win part of a £6,000 makeover in the competition run by the Dorset Echo and construction company Leadbitter.

The firm is offering to do make-over work to the cost of £3,000 for the winner and two runners-up makeovers of £2,000 and £1,000.

Leadbitter is currently undertaking £35million of improvement work in and around Dorchester.

Southill Primary School’s application to the project was to help them continue the development of the pond area.

The school’s eco-committee is working on biodiversity and they are trying to encourage as many different types of bugs and insects to the area as possible.

As part of the plan they have already built a bug hotel.

The plan would be to complete the project and build the pond and a path to the site.

Headteacher Helen Hazell said that winning would mean a lot to the children.

She said: “Although we have enough funds to excavate and line the pond, we do not have enough to complete it.

“We’re in great need of a permanent all-weather path leading to the pond as it would provide wheelchair access to the site and allow the children to monitor pond life all year.”

She added: “The children would benefit hugely, building on their knowledge of the environment and wildlife.

“Practical activities would provide children with a rich learning experience.”

You can collect the vouchers printed in the Echo every day until July 9.

Winners will be the schools where most vouchers are collected per head of students.

Schools and supporters need to send as many tokens as possible into the school, for collection after the closing date.

There will then be a final count.
