A RARE silver brooch which was found on ploughed land could be from the Tudor period.

The small oval shaped brooch with loops around the edge and a small silver bead in the middle was probably used on a woman’s dress.

It would have pinned swathes of fabric together.

The brooch was declared treasure by West Dorset Coroner Michael Johnston at West Dorset Coroner’s Court.

It was found on ploughed land at Stoke Wake near Hazelbury Bryan on February 19 by Neil Hutchings.

The brooch was sent for eva-luation and was found to ha-ve a high content of silver.

Reading from a report on the brooch Mr Johnston said: “The pin is similar to those seen in the 13th and 14th century. But the beading on it is similar to that seen on dress associated with the Tudor period.”

The coroner declared the brooch was treasure. It will now go for evaluation to the British Museum.
